Since its inception, ZSW has been supporting policy makers at the state and federal levels with its calculations, studies and analyses. ZSW researchers are sought-after experts when it comes to determining and classifying the technological and economic impact of the energy transition. ZSW is also predestined for monitoring tasks thanks to its excellent and constantly evolving database that has been maintained for several decades. The federal government has come to rely on this wealth of experience as well: it appointed ZSW's Executive Chairman, Professor Frithjof Staiß, to its four-member expert commission due to his "outstanding expertise in energy management". Each year since 2012, the independent expert panel has published a critical response to the federal government’s Monitoring Report. In the response, the experts assess the government's approach in implementing the energy transition and provide recommendations for future measures.
