// Development and construction of fuel cells

For more than 30 years, ZSW has been working on the development and construction of innovative fuel cell stacks, of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) and direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) over a power range of a few watts up to 100 kW for all applications.

The focus is on transferring scientific and technical findings to practical applications. The aim is the optimisation of performance, durability, efficiency and compactness of the fuel cells according to the requirements of the specific application. Investigating ageing processes and analysing failures are part of the scope of our work from the outset.

Other areas of our work deal with production techniques and the characterisation of fuel cell stacks, cells and components. At a very early stage, aspects of quality assurance and quantity-based automation of stack installation were addressed and tested on proprietary stack designs.

During the course of this work, considerable expertise has been developed in the automated handling of components, the application of seals (s. picture above), and the joining and stacking of cells.
