// Monitoring the energy transition in Baden-Württemberg

Baden‐Wuerttemberg faces substantial challenges in the context of the energy transition as renewable energy is set to replace the state’s traditionally dominant nuclear power generation. In addition, Baden‐Wuerttemberg has set itself ambitious targets in its Climate Protection Act: By 2020, greenhouse gas emissions are to be reduced by 25% compared to 1990 levels while the level of supply security is to be maintained. The complexity of the transformation process requires precise monitoring and evaluation of the relevant developments in the energy industry and in energy policy. The Baden-Wuerttemberg Ministry of the Environment, Climate Protection and the Energy Sector has entrusted the Systems Analysis research department with a respective monitoring task at the state level. The aim is to analyse the implementation and impact of the energy transition and to identify undesirable developments as well as suitable courses of action. The first status report in 2013 focused on the question of supply security in the electricity sector. The research department reported that a decrease in the state’s security of supply was not expected in the short term. The restructuring process that has been embarked upon requires support and monitoring. In addition, the report analyses the progress made in the areas of grid expansion, the natural gas infrastructure and the development of consumption and energy prices. The monitoring process is set to continue. ZSW’s work at the state level is supplemented by the insights its Executive Chairman Prof. Dr Frithjof Staiß is gaining as a member of the Energy Transition Committee at the federal level.
