// ZellkoBatt: Large pouch and PHEV-2 cells up to 80 ampere hours

The cells installed in batteries are key to efficient and competitive electromobility and they also account for a very high share of added value in the overall system. It is essential to have battery cell production facilities setting up bases in Germany and Europe in order to secure a future in electromobility in this country and to become a leading provider in the field. One problem is that large amounts of capital expenditure are required to set up mass production facilities without knowing whether the products will be suitable for series production on an industrial scale.

The “ZellkoBatt” project, which is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, will see the ZSW develop a pilot plant in Ulm by the middle of 2023 for the assembly of large-sized pouch cells and PHEV2 cells of up to 80 ampere-hours and 21700 round cells. This will accelerate the transfer of innovative battery cells to industrial scale production and build a bridge from prototype demonstration to mass production in Germany.

One focus of the work is the expansion of the pilot line and another is the development of innovative, industrial-grade materials, cell designs and production systems. All the production systems and production processes will be networked using artificial intelligence, for example, in order to achieve significant end-to-end improvements in quality, flexibility, speed (time to market) and efficiency.
