// ZSW’s Annual Report for 2020 Goes Online

A vivid snapshot of strategic priorities and the year’s highlights

The Centre for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Württemberg’s (ZSW) 2020 Annual Report (AR) is available now. This account of the year’s events is centered on the ZSW’s updated strategic priorities, which primarily go to further the global cause of achieving climate neutrality before 2050.

The tagline of the AR’s focus report – “Batteries: from the material to the product and back again” – sums up what this section is all about. It discusses technological advances, business developments and the environmental sustainability of the batteries that enable electromobility.

The 2020 AR also presents milestones such as the hydrogen strategies adopted at the German and European levels in the summer of 2020. This sparked interest on the part of industry and has more companies seeking to collaborate with the ZSW in electrolysis, synthetic fuel and fuel cell projects.

Manufacturing lead-free perovskite solar cells, developing building-integrated photovoltaics, conducting conservation research at a wind power test field, capturing CO2 from the air, optimizing processes with artificial intelligence, analyzing systems – all these and more highlights of the ZSW’s activities figure prominently in the AR.

“The Annual Report reflects on the many ambitious projects we pursued so successfully last year. We want to sustain this momentum to develop shared prospects for the future. Although we have made quite a bit of progress on the road to climate neutrality, we still have a long way to go,” says Professor Frithjof Staiß, Managing Director of the ZSW.

The AR features many success stories, one being Dr. Margret Wohlfahrt-Mehrens’ battery research and development efforts, for which this ZSW scientist garnered the IBA Technology Award. Another is a lighthouse project for recycling phosphorus from sewage sludge. Still another is HyFaB, a new research hydrogen and fuel cell fab in the works at Ulm. The financial section provides a transparent account of the past fiscal year’s figures.
