Annual Report 2017

In the coalition agreement, the new German Federal Government commits itself to climate protection and aims to guarantee the achievement of Germany’s ambitious goals by 2030 with a climate protection law. It must therefore prove that the same reduction in greenhouse gas emissions seen in the last two and a half decades will be achieved without any reunification effect and in half the time. For example, the share of renewable energy is to double to 65%. By then, every second kilowatt hour is expected to be generated with the fluctuating sources of wind and solar energy.

Against this background, this year's focus report in the ZSW Annual Report 2017 deals with the current status and future prospects of photovoltaics. It illustrates how technological advances could further reduce costs, and how energy systems could be optimised through new photovoltaic applications and an intelligent coupling with other technologies.

With the new building in Stuttgart, we now have an optimal spatial environment for experimental implementation of these topics. The Annual Report also presents further scientific highlights from ZSW, such as the development of a new electrolyser and processes for the series production of fuel cell stacks and components in collaboration with the automotive industry. We report on high performance battery cells that outperform commercial doublelayer capacitors in terms of both energy and power density and, last but not least, on scientific support for the energy transition at the federal and state levels.

We are pleased with the continuing great interest in our work, which we experience in many discussions and intensive media coverage. This is owed to all of our employees who, first and foremost, the Board would like to thank for their outstanding commitment. In particular, we would also like to thank the members of the Board of Trustees and its Chairman, Prof. Christian Mohrdieck. We would also like to thank the Federal State of Baden-Württemberg for its financial support and excellent cooperation and our partners from companies, public research funding and science. We hope you enjoy reading the ZSW Annual Report!

Note: The print version will be sent out from week 17 and can be ordered by e-mail from info@zsw-bw.de.
