e-fuels are particularly relevant in cases where decarbonisation is not possible at present by battery power alone or purely on the basis of hydrogen. These include long-distance or heavy-duty haulage, for example, as well as applications in the chemical and steel industries. This makes e-fuels an eco-friendly solution for these sectors. They can also be perfectly integrated in existing infrastructure – without high levels of investment in new drive technologies or fuelling systems. Synthetic fuels and raw materials have a key part to play in the decarbonisation of transport and industry and are often the only way to make these sectors climate-neutral. These include methanol, which is produced from green hydrogen. Methanol can be stored and transported very well.
